Reader mail: Which group for real estate investing education?

by Kiran

I would like to know which group to join GAREIA or North REIA. I am mostly interested in investing in North part of Atlanta like COBB, Alpharetta and Gwinnett.

LM says: Kiran, I have been with both and have benefited greatly from either. It really depends on what you are looking for in a REIA group. I started out with GAREIA in 2007, they were a large organization back then. Their membership has dropped and unfortunately they don’t offer now as much as they did when I got started with them. I know quite a few investors that are members but they are more seasoned and don’t need as much from the association as a beginner might need.

Earlier this year I joined North Metro REIA and really liked their education opportunities. Unfortunately their meetings are way up north and I am having a hard time making it over there. However, they offer a lot of education through their website.

The best advice I can give you is to find out the sub-groups of both associations that meet in the different counties you are interested. There you will find people that are actually investing in those locations and that type of networking to me has proven invaluable. You will not go wrong on joining either, the important thing is that you seek out the opportunity to learn from other investors and learn about investing in your local market. If you give me an idea of what stage you are in, in your investing and what you are looking for in a REIA then I might be able to add a bit more.

You might want to check out the page on education in real estate investing.

Thanks for stopping by,

I have been investing in RE for 4 years now, I have 9 rental properties so cant say I am a newbie but there is a lot to learn from other investors.I will start out with North REIA.
I have been thinking of getting into flipping so have been looking at local RE Investors sites like yours and J Scott's.

I would like to meet up with you for a coffee and chat and share some thoughts.

LM says:Kiran, if you have 9 rentals you are definitely not a newbie :-)I'll be glad to help. Send me an email ( with your contact info. and we'll work something out.
